This Year, Eight Ukrainian Books to be Published in English

Among the authors whose works will be translated are well-known names such as Yurii Andrukhovych, Artur Dron, Viktor Domontovych, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, Vasyl Stus, Liubko Deresh, and Sofia Yablonska, as well as an anthology of Ukrainian modernist poetry.

The novel 'Radio Night' by Yurii Andrukhovych, translated by Mark Andrychyck, will be published by New York Review Books. This work tells the story of pianist Yosyp Rotskyi, who, after the Revolution of Dignity, is forced to flee from the regime and the mafia. In Ukraine, 'Radio Night' has already been published by Meridian Czernowitz, receiving positive reviews from readers and critics alike.

Another significant book will be 'Hemingway Knows Nothing' by Artur Dron, which will be released by the British publisher Jantar Publishing in a translation by Hanna Lelev. This collection of short prose contains a soldier's testimony about his experiences during the Great War. The cover design was created by renowned Ukrainian artists Romana Romanyshyn and Andrii Lesiv. In Ukraine, this book has already been published by the Old Lion Publishing House.

Viktor Domontovych will present his experimental novel 'Doctor Serafikus', which is set to be published by Dedalus Limited. Written in 1929, this work tells the story of the eccentric Professor Komakha and his friendship with Irtsia, as well as the platonic affections of Ver and Korvyn against the backdrop of Kyiv's constructivist landscapes of the 1920s. In Ukraine, the novel has previously been published by Osnovy and also has a Vivat edition in the 'Classics' series, supplemented with previously unpublished excerpts.

In the United States, Lost Horse Press plans to release 'The Enchanted Desna' by Oleksandr Dovzhenko, translated by Ali Kinsella and Dzvinka Orlovska. This autobiographical film story recounts the author's childhood by the Desna River, emphasizing the importance of nature and family ties in his life.

Additionally, Lost Horse Press is preparing to publish a collection of poems by Vasyl Stus titled 'Vortex: Selected Poems'. This edition covers more than a decade of his early work, including texts written before his KGB arrest in 1972. The translation is being handled by Bohdan Tokarskyi and Nina Murray, indicating a serious approach to conveying Stus's poetic legacy.

Academic Studies Press will also present two English-language translations. The first is 'Medusa Gaze: Little Book of Darkness' by Liubko Deresh, which was published in Ukraine in 2024 by Anetta Antonenko Publishing House. The second project from this publisher is 'From the Land of Rice and Opium' by Sofia Yablonska, which will be released in English. In Ukraine, a new edition of 'Vikholi' will appear in 2025, and the text has been verified against the 2018 book 'Rodovodu'.

Moreover, an anthology titled 'The Ukrainian Modernist Poems: A Lost Anthology' is being prepared by Oleksandr Fraze-Frazenko. This publication will be an important contribution to the promotion of Ukrainian modernist poetry on the international stage.

As noted by Ukrinform, a total of one hundred Ukrainian books will be translated and published in 33 countries, reflecting the growing interest in Ukrainian literature worldwide. These translations open new horizons for Ukrainian authors and foster cultural exchange between Ukraine and other nations.
