The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture has announced the results of a translation project competition under the Translate Ukraine program, revealing that 100 Ukrainian books will be published in 33 countries, marking a significant step in promoting Ukrainian literature on the international stage.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture has released the results of its translation project competition, which is part of the Translate Ukraine program organized by the Ukrainian Book Institute. According to the data received, 100 Ukrainian books will be published in 33 countries around the world, an important milestone in the effort to popularize Ukrainian literature globally.
Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture of Ukraine, Tetiana Berezhna, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating: "Ukrainian literature today is a part of our cultural presence in the world. Through books, we tell our stories, our history, and our resilience. It is crucial that these stories are read in dozens of countries. The Translate Ukraine program helps make Ukrainian books more accessible."
The selection process for the projects took place in two stages. In the first stage, specialists from the Ukrainian Book Institute received and reviewed applications from publishers wishing to participate in the program. The second stage involved an Expert Council evaluating the projects and determining the winners.
According to the Ministry of Culture, this year, 179 applications were submitted by publishers from various corners of the globe, which is 18 more than last year. A total of 176 projects passed the technical selection, submitted by 119 publishers from 44 countries. As a result of the evaluation, the Expert Council supported 100 translation projects that are planned for publication within the current year.
Among the languages into which translations are planned, the largest number of publications will be in Polish, with 9 titles, followed by English with 8, and Serbian with 7. Additionally, 6 titles each are planned in Czech and German. Five books will be published in Arabic, French, and Italian.
In total, Ukrainian books will be translated into 30 languages. This includes 4 books each in Slovak, Spanish, Lithuanian, Latvian, and Macedonian; 3 books each in Greek, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Kartvelian; and 2 books each in Swedish, Azerbaijani, Portuguese, and Bengali. One book will be published in Finnish, Romanian, Hebrew, Japanese, Estonian, Hungarian, Danish, Albanian, and Bosnian.
It is important to note that publications under the Translate Ukraine program will appear not only in Europe but also on other continents. For instance, in Lebanon, "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky and "Haydamaky" by Taras Shevchenko will be published. In Egypt, the children's book "This is Me at Grandma Ustya" by Natalia Misyuk will be printed in Arabic.
In Brazil, "Medusa's Gaze" by Lyubko Deresh and "Hemingway Knows Nothing" by Artur Dron will be published in Portuguese. In India, Bengali translations of works by classic Ukrainian poets will be released.
Among the most popular books with publishers is "Hemingway Knows Nothing," which will be translated into Swedish, Polish, Lithuanian, English, Slovak, Georgian, French, and Portuguese. The mystical detective story "I See You Are Interested in Darkness" by Illarion Pavliuk will be available in Finnish, Czech, Polish, Romanian, and Azerbaijani. The novel "Amadoka" by Sofia Andrukhovych will be translated into French, Spanish, Lithuanian, and Azerbaijani.
