The publishing house 'Bukrek' in collaboration with the Italian publisher Leonida Edizioni has initiated a vital educational project aimed at preparing and printing a basic grammar textbook in the Ukrainian language. This textbook is intended for preschool and younger school-aged children who are forced to stay in Italy due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. This information was reported by the Chernivtsi Regional Council on its Facebook page, as conveyed by Ukrinform.
According to the information provided, this initiative is part of the implementation of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Chernivtsi Regional Council and the National Congress of Ukrainian Associations in Italy, which was signed on April 30, 2025. The project aims to ensure access to the study of the native language for Ukrainian children who find themselves abroad under challenging circumstances.
The Regional Council emphasized that this project is directed towards supporting the Ukrainian community abroad and developing cultural and educational ties. The project was presented during the international literary event Xenia Book Fair, which took place in the city of Reggio Calabria, Italy. This represents a significant step towards preserving the Ukrainian language and culture among children living in a foreign country.
During this event, a forum titled 'Living Language, Identity, and the Future of Ukrainian Children' was also held, which brought together representatives of local authorities, the educational community, scholars, publishers, non-governmental organizations, and the Ukrainian community. Participants at the forum discussed the importance of preserving the national identity of Ukrainian children living abroad.
Mykhailo Pavliuk, the Deputy Chairman of the Chernivtsi Regional Council, emphasized during his speech the importance of implementing such initiatives to preserve the national identity of Ukrainian children who are compelled to live in a foreign culture. He noted that such projects would not only help children learn their native language but also maintain a connection with Ukrainian cultural heritage.
Additionally, as part of a working visit to Italy, Mykhailo Pavliuk met with the President of the Calabria region, Salvatore Cirrilo. During this meeting, the officials discussed the current needs of Ukrainian communities in the context of martial law, as well as possible directions for further cooperation. They specifically addressed the support for the project of publishing a textbook for Ukrainian children, which is extremely important under the current circumstances.
It is worth recalling that recently a large-scale exhibition titled 'UKRAINE, a tragedy of the people, a wound for Europe' was opened in the historic Castle of Castello Aragonese in the Italian city of Otranto. This exhibition, through the lenses of professional photographers, showcases the realities of life for Ukrainians since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion, drawing attention to the difficult situation faced by Ukraine.
