BMW iX5 Hydrogen Unveils New Hydrogen Storage System with Range of Up to 750 km

BMW is advancing its hydrogen vehicle technology with the introduction of a new hydrogen storage system for the iX5 Hydrogen model, achieving an impressive range of up to 750 kilometers without compromising interior space.

BMW continues to push the boundaries of hydrogen vehicle technology with its latest innovation: a new hydrogen storage system designed for the iX5 Hydrogen model. This cutting-edge system enables the vehicle to achieve a remarkable range of up to 750 kilometers while maintaining ample space within the car's interior. The innovative technology, known as Hydrogen Flat Storage, employs seven interconnected tanks that replace traditional separate cylinders, allowing for a rapid refueling time of less than five minutes.

The Hydrogen Flat Storage system represents a novel approach to hydrogen storage, where seven chambers are integrated into a single block. These chambers are constructed from a composite material reinforced with carbon fiber and are capable of operating under pressures of up to 700 bar, accommodating at least 7 kilograms of hydrogen. This design significantly reduces the refueling time, making it a substantial advantage for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

One of the standout features of the new storage system is its flat shape, which aligns with the floor geometry that BMW utilizes for its sixth-generation batteries. This design allows for the installation of the hydrogen system without sacrificing space in the passenger cabin or the trunk. According to the company, rear-seat passengers will not notice any changes in legroom, and the trunk volume will remain unchanged, a crucial aspect for many consumers.

Joachim Post, a member of BMW's board, emphasized that the arrangement of components in the new system posed a complex challenge, likening the process to a game of Tetris. He noted that the company plans to offer the X5 model with five different types of powertrains — electric, plug-in hybrid, gasoline, diesel, mild hybrid, and hydrogen. All these versions must adhere to the same dimensions, which imposes additional requirements on engineering solutions.

In addition to the new hydrogen storage system, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen will also feature a third-generation fuel cell, which is more efficient and powerful compared to previous models. This system operates in tandem with a high-voltage battery and chassis management software, ensuring a driving experience comparable to that of other X5 versions.

BMW is set to commence mass production of the iX5 Hydrogen in 2028. Currently, the model is undergoing testing as part of a limited pilot project in Europe and California. However, whether the hydrogen refueling infrastructure will develop sufficiently by the time the vehicle hits the market remains uncertain. This question is crucial for the future of hydrogen vehicles, as their success hinges not only on technological innovations but also on the availability of the necessary infrastructure.
