US Embassy in Riyadh Suffers Extensive Damage from Shahed Drone Strikes

The US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has sustained more extensive damage from recent Shahed drone strikes than previously reported, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has experienced significant destruction following strikes from Iranian-made Shahed drones, as revealed by sources familiar with the situation. The Wall Street Journal reported that the damage inflicted on March 3 was far greater than what has been publicly disclosed, according to both current and former US officials.

On that night, two drones, believed to be of the Shahed type, which Iran has been deploying extensively in the region, targeted the embassy within a minute of each other. The second drone struck a hole created by the first drone's impact, detonating inside the building. This assault hit a 'secure' section of the embassy, which typically accommodates several hundred personnel during the day, and severely damaged three floors of the structure. Among the affected areas was a CIA work station.

Initially, the Saudi Ministry of Defense reported that the attack resulted in a 'limited fire and minor damage.' However, sources speaking to the publication indicated that the fire lasted for half a day following the strikes. One source noted that the most severely damaged part of the embassy is 'beyond repair.'

In the wake of these attacks, the United States announced the closure of its embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, both of which had come under fire from Iranian drones. In recent developments, it has also been reported that Iran has shot down American aircraft for the first time during the ongoing campaign, including an F-15 with two crew members and an A-10 Thunderbolt II with one pilot. The fate of one crew member from the F-15 remains unknown, while the others have been rescued and are safe.

According to official data, the United States has lost 13 military personnel during the campaign, with seven of those deaths occurring directly as a result of combat. Additionally, over 360 service members have sustained injuries throughout this period.

The situation has escalated tensions in the region, with both the US and Iran engaging in a series of retaliatory actions and countermeasures. The attacks on the US embassy in Riyadh highlight the ongoing threat posed by Iranian drone technology, which has been increasingly utilized in conflicts across the Middle East.

As the United States reassesses its military presence and diplomatic strategies in the region, the implications of these drone strikes will likely influence future engagements and policies. The embassy's closure serves as a stark reminder of the volatile security environment that American diplomats and military personnel face in the region.

This incident underscores the broader geopolitical dynamics at play, as Iran continues to assert its influence through asymmetric warfare tactics, while the US seeks to maintain its strategic interests in the Middle East. The evolving situation remains a critical point of concern for both nations and their allies.
