Zelensky Instructs Government to Secure Representative Status for Crimean Tatar Mejlis

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed decree No. 293/2026, aimed at addressing crucial issues related to the rights of the Crimean Tatar people. This document is intended to facilitate the realization of the sustainable development rights of the Crimean Tatar community.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed decree No. 293/2026, which pertains to significant matters concerning the rights of the Crimean Tatar people. This document, published on the official website of the head of state, is designed to promote the realization of the right to sustainable development for the Crimean Tatar community, as well as to guarantee its ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious identity.

According to the decree, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has been instructed to urgently address the issue of securing legal status for the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as a representative body. This means that the Mejlis, which represents the interests of the Crimean Tatars, will receive official status that will enable it to more effectively advocate for the rights and interests of its people.

The decree takes effect upon its publication, underscoring the urgency and importance of this step for the Crimean Tatar community. It is important to note that the issue of the rights of Crimean Tatars remains relevant, especially in the context of the ongoing aggression from Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014.

Previously, as reported by Ukrinform, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people appealed to President Volodymyr Zelensky with a request to include their representative in the Ukrainian delegation during international negotiations concerning issues related to Crimea. This indicates the Crimean Tatars' desire to be actively involved in the decision-making processes that affect their fate and the future of Crimea.

This decree represents a significant step towards recognizing the rights of the Crimean Tatar people and their representation on the international stage. Securing the status of the Mejlis as a representative body will not only enhance its role in Ukraine's domestic politics but also facilitate better communication between the Ukrainian authorities and the Crimean Tatar community.

Thus, the decree from the President of Ukraine emphasizes the state's commitment to protecting the rights of national minorities and ensuring their interests in the challenging conditions of modernity. This is an important signal for the Crimean Tatars that their rights and culture are not overlooked by the Ukrainian state.
