Japanese Speedskater Miho Takagi Announces Retirement After 2026 Olympics

Miho Takagi, the Japanese speedskater who clinched three bronze medals at the 2026 Olympics held in Italy, has announced her retirement from competitive skating, surprising many fans who regarded her as one of the brightest stars in the sport.

Miho Takagi, the renowned Japanese speedskater, has officially declared her retirement from competitive skating following a remarkable performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, where she secured three bronze medals in the 500 meters, 1000 meters, and the team pursuit event. This announcement has come as a shock to her fans and the sports community, as Takagi has been a prominent figure in the world of speed skating.

After concluding her participation in the Olympic Games in Italy and the subsequent World Championships, the 31-year-old athlete decided it was time to hang up her skates. According to reports from the Japanese news agency Kyodo News, Takagi expressed that while speed skating will always be a part of her life, she feels she can no longer reach the heights she once aspired to achieve.

"Speed skating will always be a part of me, and it still feels somewhat unreal. I increasingly felt that I was not becoming the athlete I wanted to be. I began to think that it would be difficult to continue chasing that ideal. This is not so much a decision to leave, but rather a feeling that I have simply accepted this fact," Takagi stated in her comments regarding her retirement.

In her reflections on the future, Takagi shared her aspirations: "Until now, I have spent my time narrowly focused on the world of skating. From now on, I want to spread my wings wide, try many new things, and move forward on my own path. It has given me immense experience and an environment where I could fully dedicate myself to my work."

Takagi also expressed her gratitude for the opportunities that sport has provided her: "I am thankful that I encountered this in my life. I do not know exactly how I will be involved in sports in the future, but the memories and experiences will always remain with me."

Miho Takagi made her Olympic debut at the Vancouver Games in 2010 when she was just 15 years old. However, it was not until 2018 that she earned her first Olympic medals, which included a gold, silver, and bronze. At the Beijing Olympics in 2022, she added a second gold medal to her collection, along with three silver medals, further solidifying her status as a top competitor on the international stage.

The news of Miho Takagi's retirement has sent shockwaves not only through her fanbase but also across the entire sports community. Previously, reports indicated that Ukrainian biathlete had also faced difficult times due to missing the 2026 Olympics, highlighting the importance for athletes to have the opportunity to realize their dreams on the international stage.
