Ukrainian Interceptor Drones Destroy Over 33,000 Enemy UAVs in March, Says Fedotov
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedotov announced that Ukrainian interceptor drones have successfully destroyed more than 33,000 enemy UAVs in March alone, highlighting the effectiveness of this innovative technology in the nation's air defense.
In a recent Facebook post, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedotov shared significant updates regarding the country's defense capabilities, particularly focusing on the performance of interceptor drones. According to Fedotov, these drones have become a crucial part of Ukraine's air defense system, achieving remarkable success in March by shooting down over 33,000 enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of various types, including 'Shaheds', 'Gerbers', 'Molnias', 'Zalas', 'Orlans', and others. This figure represents a doubling of the number of UAVs intercepted compared to the previous month.
Fedotov emphasized that the primary challenge facing Ukrainian forces is the increasing use of reactive 'Shahed' drones by Russia. He noted that the speed and scale of their deployment are rising, making interception more complex. 'Our task is to find a technological solution. Together with manufacturers, we analyzed the products and their readiness, identified 'bottlenecks,' and synchronized actions for rapid scaling,' he stated.
In addition to discussing interception technologies, Fedotov revealed that Brave1 has recently supported 12 technologies as part of the EU4UA Defence Tech grant program in collaboration with the European Union. Companies involved in this initiative can receive up to €150,000 for the development of high-speed interceptors (capable of exceeding 450 km/h) and modern systems for countering aerial targets.
Fedotov further mentioned that, following the President's directive, they discussed systemic issues related to defense, including contracting for 2026, pilot training, testing grounds, shortages of ground stations, export opportunities, and updating performance evaluation criteria within the Army's drone units. 'For every problem, we are preparing solutions,' he added.
The Minister reminded that the Ministry of Defense has taken several systematic steps to create and develop the interceptor market. Notably, they launched a unique reward model for companies that successfully intercept 'Shaheds'. This experimental program led to the first successful interception of a 'Shahed' by an interceptor drone.
Since the beginning of 2024, Brave1 has issued over 40 grants to manufacturers, and there are currently around 100 producers of interceptor drones within the cluster. Additionally, they have launched the Brave1 Dataroom, a platform for training and validating artificial intelligence models. Currently, over 30 companies are testing, validating, and training more than 50 AI models designed to detect and intercept aerial targets under various conditions and times of day.
During the meeting, Fedotov set two key tasks for manufacturers: to develop and scale technologies for reactive interceptor drones to counter the reactive 'Shaheds', and to create alternative guidance systems for operation in challenging weather conditions. He stressed that the state is ready to quickly purchase new technologies from manufacturers who can effectively meet these tasks and protect Ukrainian airspace under transparent market conditions.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Defense Procurement Agency (DOTA) has systematically increased the procurement of engineering mines and munitions for drones at the direction of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
