Ukrainian Pysanka in India: Easter Egg Painting Workshop Held in Delhi
A unique event celebrating the Ukrainian tradition of Easter egg painting took place recently in Delhi, India, attracting participants eager to learn this intricate art form.
In the capital of India, Delhi, a significant event dedicated to the Ukrainian tradition of Easter egg painting was held recently. The workshop, titled "Pysanka from India," gathered interested participants in the cozy atmosphere of the Hippie Bus café. This was reported on Facebook by Marina Akram, a representative of the local Ukrainian community, as conveyed by Ukrinform.
The event was led by experienced artisan Natalia Oksenyuk, who taught participants the intricacies of working with wax and pysachok tools. This process proved not only to be creative but also quite challenging, which came as a revelation to many attendees. Participants of various ages took part in the workshop, allowing for the transmission of knowledge about Ukrainian symbols to the younger generation of the diaspora.
A notable feature of the event was its international character. Among the participants were Indian correspondent Garshita and cameraman Mammi from Madagascar, who tried their hand at painting pysankas for the first time. The guests were impressed not only by the beauty but also by the complexity of this traditional Ukrainian art. During breaks from the creative process, an improvised cultural exchange took place, during which Mammi sang a folk song in his native Creole language, and the Ukrainians responded with traditional folk singing, creating an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding.
“Our new acquaintance Mammi promised that when he returns to Madagascar, he will definitely show how to paint pysankas like the ones we made in our photos!” shared Marina Akram, reflecting on the experience. She also expressed gratitude to the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India and personally to Volodymyr Prytula for providing the necessary materials for creativity, including the scarce pysachok tools that were essential for the event.
Both adults and children participated in the workshop, which became an important element in passing on Ukrainian traditions and culture. According to participants, the day was filled with sincere communication, helping them feel connected to home even thousands of kilometers away from Ukraine. This highlights the importance of preserving cultural traditions and passing them on to future generations, even while being far from their homeland.
It is worth noting that recently, a large exhibition of Easter eggs representing all regions of Ukraine was also presented at the Ukrainian House in the capital of the United States. This collection spans decades of history—from the art of the diaspora to examples from modern Ukraine—underscoring the significance of Ukrainian traditions in the world.
