Ukraine Neutralizes Last Ferry in Kerch Strait Supplying Russian Forces in Occupied Crimea, Military Intelligence Reports

On April 6, 2026, Ukrainian forces successfully executed a nighttime strike that incapacitated the 'Slavyanin' ferry, the last operational rail ferry in the Kerch Strait supplying Russian troops in occupied Crimea.

On April 6, 2026, Ukrainian military forces conducted a successful nighttime operation that resulted in the incapacitation of the 'Slavyanin' ferry, which had been the last operational rail ferry in the Kerch Strait used for supplying Russian military forces in the occupied territory of Crimea. This information was disclosed by Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) on April 8.

The 'Slavyanin' ferry had previously been targeted in attacks during March, yet managed to remain operational until this latest strike. HUR did not provide detailed information regarding the extent of the damage inflicted on the ferry, only stating that it is no longer operational. Independent verification of these claims has not been possible.

This ferry served as a crucial supply route for the Russian army on the occupied peninsula, transporting fuel, lubricants, weapons, military equipment, and ammunition, according to HUR's reports.

In a prior operation that took place on the night of March 13-14, HUR units struck both the 'Slavyanin' and another ferry named 'Avangard.' The latter was incapacitated, while the 'Slavyanin' sustained damage during that operation.

The Kerch Strait, which spans 35 kilometers (21 miles), connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, separating the Kerch Peninsula in occupied Crimea from the Taman Peninsula in Russia. This strait is a vital logistical corridor for Moscow, facilitating the movement of military supplies and personnel.

Kyiv has been regularly attempting to target Russian military infrastructure in occupied territories, as well as oil, gas, and industrial facilities that support Moscow's military efforts.

Ukrainian officials emphasize that such strikes are aimed at disrupting the logistics of Russian forces, diminishing the effectiveness of air defense systems, and reducing the supplies available to Russian military units. The ongoing conflict has seen a strategic focus on undermining the operational capabilities of Russian troops through targeted attacks on critical supply lines.
