Ukraine Strikes Key Russian Plant in Occupied Luhansk for Second Time This Month, Halting Production

On April 4, 2026, Ukrainian military forces launched a strike on the Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant in the occupied Luhansk region, marking the second attack on this strategic facility within a month and resulting in a complete halt of its production processes.

On April 4, 2026, Ukrainian military forces executed a targeted strike on the Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant, located in the occupied Luhansk region. This operation, which occurred for the first time in a month, led to a complete cessation of production activities at this critical industrial site. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that this strike is significant in disrupting production lines that support the Russian military effort.

The Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant is a vital industrial facility that provides essential materials for the Russian armed forces. The last time the plant was targeted by Ukrainian forces was on March 20, when significant damage was inflicted on its critical production capabilities.

The SBU conducted this operation in collaboration with the Ukrainian Drone Forces (SBS), which identified key production assets within the plant and attacked them using FP-2 drones. These drones are manufactured by the Ukrainian defense company Fire Point, which also produces Flamingo missiles.

The attack resulted in damage to blast furnaces, crucial production workshops, gas pipelines, distillation columns, and electrical substations—all of which are essential for the plant's operations. According to the SBU, the extent of the damage forced the facility to suspend its activities.

The Security Service of Ukraine released video footage of the attack, showcasing drones striking various parts of the plant, with flames rising from its premises. However, as of the time of publication, Kyiv Independent was unable to confirm the SBU's claims.

The Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant has been under Russian control since 2015, when it was seized during Russia's invasion of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. According to the SBU, the plant's output is now supplied to the Russian engineering company Uralvagonzavod, which specializes in the production of military equipment.

This company manufactures T-90 battle tanks and Msta-S howitzers for the Russian armed forces, as reported by the SBU. Ukrainian forces have been routinely targeting military and industrial sites within Russian territory and in occupied regions of Ukraine. In recent days, the Ukrainian army has reported a series of successful operations in occupied Ukraine, including strikes on fuel trains in the Luhansk region and drone storage facilities at the Kirovsk airport in Crimea.
