Ukraine has expressed its readiness to utilize its experience acquired in the Black Sea to assist in ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This announcement was made by Georgiy Tikhiy, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, during a recent briefing.
Tikhiy emphasized that Ukraine has actively participated in political and military meetings regarding the assurance of maritime freedom in the Strait of Hormuz, under the leadership of the United Kingdom. He noted that Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has been involved in political negotiations, while Ukrainian military representatives have engaged in discussions at technical and military levels.
“This proposal remains on the table; it is still valid… If our allies need Ukraine's services, we are ready to provide them,” Tikhiy stressed, highlighting the importance of cooperation with international partners.
Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that approximately 15 countries plan to aid in the restoration of movement through the Strait of Hormuz following a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. This development indicates a growing international support for security matters in the region.
On the night of April 8, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had agreed to suspend bombings of Iran for two weeks, contingent upon the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the U.S. had already “achieved and exceeded all military objectives” and had “made significant progress” towards reaching a final peace agreement.
Subsequently, Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed the agreement for a two-week ceasefire with the United States. Israel also agreed to suspend bombings during the negotiations, indicating a reduction of tensions in the region.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that he is inviting delegations from Iran and the U.S. to meet in Islamabad for further negotiations. This could represent a significant step toward achieving stability in the region and restoring dialogue between the parties involved.
In the lead-up to this, Trump had issued a series of threats against Iran, stating that the U.S. could “destroy Iran in one night” and bomb all bridges and power plants in the country within hours. He also warned that failure to comply with his demands would result in “the destruction of an entire civilization.” These statements have raised concerns within the international community and underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts.
The ultimatum announced by Trump was set to expire at 8:00 PM Eastern Time in the U.S. (03:00 AM on April 8 in Kyiv), creating additional pressure on Iran during the negotiations. The situation remains tense, and the subsequent actions of international players could significantly influence the developments in the region.
