Slovakia Considers Expanding Military Powers Following Russian Drone Incident

Slovakia is contemplating an expansion of its armed forces' powers in response to a recent incident involving Russian drones near its border, as stated by President Peter Pellegrini in a video address.

Slovakia is currently evaluating the possibility of broadening the powers of its armed forces following a recent incident involving Russian drones that occurred near its border. President Peter Pellegrini made this announcement in a video address, commenting on the situation that has raised concerns in the country, as reported by the Ukrinform news agency.

Pellegrini emphasized that the incident, which took place on April 1, when three Russian drones attacked the Ukrainian city of Perechyn—located just 10 kilometers from the Slovak border—has served as a significant argument for initiating discussions on potential legislative changes. The President expressed his support for the military's request to include a provision for a state of emergency in Slovak legislation, which would enable the army to respond more effectively to such threats.

“Today, we only know of a state of peace or a state of war in Slovakia. There is nothing in between. Our military faces a challenge, as in peacetime, they cannot effectively implement all preventive measures that would allow for the safe resolution of incidents such as a possible crash of a stray drone or other equipment on our territory,” Pellegrini remarked, highlighting the importance of timely responses to threats.

The President also announced a roundtable discussion scheduled for next week, where military leaders will have the opportunity to explain to politicians the nature and significance of the proposed changes. Pellegrini noted that opposition politicians have also been invited to participate in this discussion, indicating a desire to engage all political forces in addressing security issues.

“I firmly believe that after this meeting, this issue will cease to be a point of contention between the opposition and the coalition, and it will become a common task for all responsible politicians aimed at ensuring the safety of Slovak citizens,” he added, emphasizing the importance of unity on national security matters.

Pellegrini believes that the outcome of the discussions should lead to legislative changes that grant the armed forces the authority to implement “protective measures” to safeguard Slovakia's territory and airspace. This would enable the army to operate more effectively in the face of modern threats emerging in the region.

It is worth noting that on April 1, Russian drones attacked critical infrastructure in two districts of Ukraine's Transcarpathian region, resulting in one injury. This incident has raised concerns not only in Ukraine but also in neighboring countries, particularly Slovakia, where fears of potential repercussions for national security are prevalent.

In light of these events, the Slovak President has called for proactive measures and strengthening the country's defense capabilities, which is a crucial step in ensuring stability and security in the region. The Slovak army, as Pellegrini points out, must have the capacity to respond to emerging threats and ensure the protection of its citizens.
