Two Ukrainians Charged in Romania Over 'Explosive' Packages Case
In Romania, prosecutors have charged two Ukrainian citizens in connection with a case involving 'explosive' packages believed to have been sent under the direction of Russian intelligence services.
In Romania, the prosecution has officially charged two Ukrainian citizens in relation to a case concerning 'explosive' packages, which are suspected to have been dispatched under the guidance of Russian intelligence agencies. This information was reported by the news source 'European Truth', citing details from Balkan Insight.
On April 6, 2023, the Romanian prosecution formally brought charges against a 23-year-old and a 24-year-old Ukrainian citizen. They are suspected of attempting to commit sabotage and complicity in such actions as part of the investigation into the 'explosive' packages, which, according to investigators, were part of a broader operation coordinated by Russian intelligence services.
According to information provided by the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), the suspects brought two packages for shipment via the 'Nova Poshta' service in October 2022. Investigators noted that there was a real risk of fire, which could threaten national security, as the shipping location was situated on the first floor of a seven-story residential building in a densely populated area of Bucharest.
Both Ukrainians have been in custody since October 2022. They were apprehended as a result of joint actions by Romanian law enforcement and their Polish counterparts, who simultaneously detained six other suspects within Poland. If convicted, the Ukrainians face a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years.
This case has broader implications, as a trial began in Germany in mid-March 2023 against Ukrainians who, according to investigators, may have been preparing a route for 'explosive' packages on behalf of Russian intelligence services. This indicates that such incidents are raising concerns not only in Romania but also in other European countries.
Additionally, in Lithuania, cases against five individuals were referred to court in early March 2023, who are also accused of similar crimes. Among them are Ukrainians, further highlighting the scale of the problem related to the activities of Russian intelligence services in Europe and their attempts to destabilize the situation in the region.
Thus, the case of the 'explosive' packages being investigated in Romania is part of a larger picture where Ukrainians, caught in the center of international terrorist threats, are becoming subjects of investigations in multiple countries simultaneously. This raises serious questions regarding security and cooperation among law enforcement agencies of different states in combating organized crime and terrorism.
