Police Officer Convicted in Mykolaiv for Breaking Lawyer's Rib
In a significant legal ruling in Mykolaiv, a police officer has been found guilty of exceeding his authority and abusing his official powers, following an incident that left a lawyer with a broken rib.
A court in Mykolaiv has recently concluded a trial in which a police officer was convicted of exceeding his authority and abusing his official powers. According to reports from Ukrinform, this information was made public through the State Bureau of Investigations.
Investigators revealed that the incident occurred in January 2022, when patrol officers stopped a vehicle for violating traffic regulations. At the time, a lawyer was seated in the passenger seat of the car. After the vehicle was halted, the lawyer decided to provide legal assistance to the driver and requested that the officers identify themselves.
However, the reaction from the platoon commander was aggressive. Without hesitation, he deployed tear gas against the lawyer, knocked him to the ground, handcuffed him, and began to kick him. As a result of this brutal treatment, the lawyer suffered a broken rib, which became a serious consequence of the officer's unlawful actions.
The Ingul District Court, after reviewing the case, found the police officer guilty of exceeding his authority or official powers, which falls under part 2 of Article 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court sentenced him to four years of imprisonment and also stripped him of the right to hold positions in law enforcement for a period of three years.
This case underscores the importance of upholding human rights and legality in the operations of law enforcement agencies. In Ukraine, as in many other countries, there is a pressing need to ensure the protection of lawyers' rights as they carry out their professional duties in providing legal assistance to citizens.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that this is not an isolated incident of excessive force by law enforcement. As reported by Ukrinform, recently, employees of the State Bureau of Investigations detained the head of a group from one of the departments of the Kovel Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support. This officer, along with other military personnel, also committed acts of violence, applying excessive force against a 60-year-old man during an attempt to mobilize him.
Such incidents raise concerns within society and highlight the necessity for reforming law enforcement agencies in Ukraine to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The public and human rights advocates are calling for increased oversight of police and other security forces to ensure adherence to human rights and legality.
