Two World Premieres of Symphonies by Contemporary Ukrainian Composers to be Held at Lviv Organ Hall

A significant cultural event is set to take place at the Lviv Organ Hall, capturing the attention of classical music enthusiasts. The Luhansk Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Ivan Ostapovich, will perform two world premieres of symphonies by contemporary Ukrainian composers Pavensky and Stronko.

The Lviv Organ Hall is preparing to host a notable cultural event that promises to draw the interest of classical music fans. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture, the Luhansk Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Ivan Ostapovich, will present two world premieres of symphonies composed by modern Ukrainian composers—Pavensky and Stronko. These works, commissioned by the Organ Hall, serve as reflections on the present day, embodied in a symphonic scale.

Kyiv-based composer and musicologist Stronko, who explores the manifestations of time in music through the lens of Heidegger's philosophy, will unveil his Fifth Symphony, subtitled 'Four Paths.' This symphony contemplates the human experience at a crossroads, examining the state of the individual and society during times of uncertainty. In the context of war, this sense of uncertainty is heightened to its limits, prompting the question: where do we go from here?

The structure of the symphony consists of four movements: 'Path of Contemplation,' 'Path of Action,' 'Path Home,' and 'Path Beyond the Horizon.' These sections create a profound musical narrative that reflects various aspects of human experience. A crucial element of the piece is the 'pure countdown of time,' represented through the sounds of the xylophone and bells, reminding us of the fragility of a world where the fate of both individuals and the nation hangs in the balance at every moment.

The second symphony will be presented by Pavensky, a representative of the Lviv composer school, who dedicated his work to the defenders who sacrificed their lives for Ukraine. The symphony is titled: 'Memories... I will return, dear mother, from the war, I will return to live.' The creation of this piece took two and a half years, encapsulating the experiences of the full-scale invasion. The concept of 'family cinema' forms the basis of the symphony: the sections of the work are akin to frames of memory and recollections that emerge non-chronologically. Bright motifs of childhood gradually transform into a sinister scherzo, symbolizing the intrusion of war into the private space of individuals.

This event is part of the Ukrainian Live Classic project and continues the strategy of the Lviv Organ Hall aimed at commissioning new music from contemporary Ukrainian authors. Since 2019, this initiative has led to the creation of works by composers such as Zoltan Almasi, Oleg Bezborodko, Bohdana Folyak, Oleksandr Rodin, Dmytro Malyi, Serhiy Piliutykov, Serhiy Leontiev, Maria Sleptchenko, Volodymyr Bohatyriov, Oleksandr Saratstiy, and many others.

In addition, as reported by Ukrinform, a special performance by the world-renowned Kyiv Children's Choir 'Shchedryk' recently took place in the capital of the Czech Republic, organized by the Ukrainian Embassy. Young performers showcased a program that combined masterpieces from Ukrainian and European composers, demonstrating the richness of Ukrainian musical culture on the international stage.

All classical music enthusiasts are invited to join this important cultural event, where contemporary Ukrainian music will find its place in history.
