On March 31, 2023, a tragic accident occurred on the occupied Crimean Peninsula involving an AN-26 transport aircraft, leading to the deaths of 29 military personnel. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the aircraft crashed in the mountainous region of the peninsula, prompting extensive search operations.

Among the deceased was Lieutenant General Alexander Otrushenko, who had been serving as the commander of the Northern Fleet's aviation corps since 2013. BBC reports that Otrushenko's death was confirmed by a relative of one of the other victims of the crash and was discussed in local Telegram chats; however, official confirmation of this information has yet to be released.

Otrushenko also participated in Russian military operations in Syria, highlighting his significance within Russia's military hierarchy. The aircraft crash serves as yet another indication of the losses the Russian army has sustained due to ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

Following the accident, a criminal case was opened under Article 351 of the Russian Criminal Code, which pertains to violations of flight rules or preparatory norms. The Russian Investigative Committee announced that an investigation is underway, and search efforts continue in the mountainous area where the crash reportedly occurred.

According to information provided by the Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti, military investigators, rescuers, police, and forensic experts are participating in the search operations. It is known that the aircraft, according to TASS, crashed into a rock. Initially, RIA Novosti, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported that the fate of the aircraft and crew remained unknown, and a team was dispatched for search and rescue operations.

The Ministry of Defense also noted that "there is no evidence of external damage to the aircraft" despite the loss of communication. It is important to highlight that no direct accusations have been made against Ukraine regarding this incident, and Kyiv has not claimed any involvement in the crash.

The death of Otrushenko marks the 14th loss among Russian generals since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, indicating the significant casualties that Russian command has endured during the conflict.
