Russia and Iran Collaboration Will Change U.S. Attitude Towards Moscow, Says John Herbst

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst explained how the collaboration between Russia and Iran in the Middle Eastern conflict will inevitably alter the U.S. President's perception of the Russian dictator.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst has articulated the potential ramifications of the growing cooperation between Russia and Iran, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He emphasized that the United States may hold Russia accountable for providing Iran with intelligence that has been utilized to target U.S. military assets and their allies in the region.

In an interview with NV, Herbst, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine from 2003 to 2006 and is currently the director of the Eurasian Center at the Atlantic Council, pointed out that Russia's actions in the Middle East cannot be overlooked. He believes that the situation necessitates an appropriate response from the United States.

“Trump ignored or attempted to ignore Russia’s hostile actions against our soldiers, our pilots, and against our friends and allies in the Middle East,” Herbst explained. “But I don’t think he can continue to do that,” he emphasized, signaling a shift in the expected U.S. response.

Herbst also highlighted that it was Russian intelligence that enabled Iranian forces to strike a military base in Riyadh, located in Saudi Arabia, resulting in injuries to approximately ten American soldiers and the destruction of one U.S. AWACS aircraft. According to him, this incident underscores the serious threat posed by the collaboration between Russia and Iran.

The former ambassador speculated that the United States might attempt to soften its position towards Moscow due to its actions in the Middle East, but he doubts that Washington can maintain such a strategy moving forward. Herbst stressed that the situation demands active measures from the U.S., as the direct threat to American military personnel and allies cannot be ignored.

Thus, the collaboration between Russia and Iran in military operations in the Middle East could become a decisive factor in shaping a new U.S. foreign policy towards Moscow. Experts believe that the unfolding events in the region may significantly influence the relationship between the U.S. and Russia, as well as the broader global political landscape.
