Simeone Comments on Islamophobic Chants During Spain vs Egypt Match

Atletico Madrid's head coach Diego Simeone has spoken out regarding the Islamophobic incidents that occurred during the friendly match between Spain and Egypt held in Barcelona at the Cornella El Prat Stadium. The match, which ended in a 0-0 draw, saw fans chanting offensive slogans that sparked outrage among players and the wider public.

Diego Simeone, the head coach of Atletico Madrid, has addressed the troubling incidents that transpired during the recent friendly match between the Spanish national team and Egypt, which took place at the Cornella El Prat Stadium in Barcelona. The match concluded with a score of 0-0, but it was the behavior of the fans that drew significant attention, as they chanted Islamophobic slogans that were met with widespread condemnation from players and the public alike.

Simeone emphasized that such displays of hatred should not be viewed merely as issues confined to a single country. He pointed out that this is a social and global problem affecting many nations, including Spain, Argentina, and Brazil. He expressed concern that society has lost respect for several important institutions, such as parents, teachers, police, club directors, and coaches. "This reflects the respect that has been lost over several years. Today, it has vanished, and we no longer possess it. We all must work with the awareness that this path lies in the belief that with faith in God, we can improve ourselves," said Simeone.

During the match, chants echoed from the stands: "Whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim," which provoked a particularly negative response, especially considering that one of the players on the Spanish national team, Lamine Yamal, is a Muslim. Yamal commented on the situation, stating, "I am a Muslim, Alhamdulillah. Yesterday at the stadium, the chant ‘whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim’ was heard. I understand that it was directed at the opponent and not personally aimed at me, but as a Muslim, I consider this a display of disrespect and something unacceptable."

Yamal further emphasized that not all fans share such views, but he urged those who sing such things to reflect on their actions. "Using religion as a mockery in the stadium means showing oneself to be uneducated and racist. Football is about enjoyment and support, not about insulting people for who they are and what they believe," he added.

The actions of the fans did not go unnoticed, and they were condemned not only by Simeone and Yamal but also by La Liga president Javier Tebas, Spain's Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños, and the Egyptian Football Association. According to media reports, the Spanish police have already launched an investigation into the incident to identify those responsible for the offensive chants.

It is worth noting that former Liverpool player Mohamed Sissoko previously advised Yamal to consider leaving the Spanish national team due to the abuse he faced from fans. This incident serves as yet another reminder of the importance of combating racism and discrimination in sports and society as a whole.
