Russia Justifies Mass Shelling of Zaporizhzhia by Claiming 'Almost No Civilians Left' - CPD
The Russian Federation has launched a new information campaign aimed at justifying the systematic shelling of the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine via their Telegram channel.
The Russian Federation has initiated a new information campaign that seeks to justify the ongoing and systematic shelling of the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. According to a report by Ukrinform, the Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD) under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has highlighted this troubling development through their Telegram channel. Propaganda resources are actively disseminating statements allegedly made by a prisoner of war, who claims that 'almost no civilians are left in Zaporizhzhia' and that there are 'more military personnel than civilians on the streets.' This assertion has raised concerns among experts, who point out its lack of credibility.
The CPD emphasizes that these claims do not reflect reality and are being utilized by Russia to provide informational cover for its attacks. Any shelling is portrayed as strikes against 'military targets,' which is part of a broader propaganda strategy. It is crucial to underline that Zaporizhzhia is a large Ukrainian city where civilians continue to reside. The city is home to functioning hospitals, public infrastructure, businesses, and educational institutions, indicating that it remains viable even amid the ongoing war.
The CPD also draws attention to the fact that this narrative is being promoted using 'testimonies' from a prisoner of war. However, such sources cannot be considered objective, as prisoners are under the complete control of the detaining party and provide comments under duress. Consequently, information coming from such sources cannot serve as a basis for justifying actions that contravene international humanitarian law.
'The use of prisoners of war for propaganda purposes constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law,' the Center for Countering Disinformation stressed. This remark underscores the seriousness of the situation and the necessity of adhering to international law norms in times of conflict.
It is worth recalling that recently, on April 2, Zaporizhzhia experienced a Russian attack that resulted in damage to six residential buildings. This incident once again confirms that the city remains under threat, and its residents continue to suffer the consequences of the war. In the face of constant shelling, it is vital for the international community to pay attention to the situation in Zaporizhzhia and support Ukraine in its struggle for independence.
