UNDP Invests $550 Million in Ukraine's Energy Sector Since 2022, Says Regional Bureau Director

In an interview with Ukrinform, Ivana Zhivkovich, the Director of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, revealed that the organization has invested over $550 million into Ukraine's energy sector since 2022.

In an interview with Ukrinform, Ivana Zhivkovich, the Director of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, revealed that the organization has invested over $550 million into Ukraine's energy sector since 2022. This substantial funding has been made possible through contributions from countries such as Norway and Japan, along with support from the European Union, Denmark, Belgium, Iceland, Germany, France, and the Republic of Korea.

Zhivkovich highlighted that these investments have enabled the procurement and deployment of critically important energy equipment across several Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv, Lviv, Chernihiv, Volyn, and Sumy. She emphasized that in just 2025 alone, access to reliable electricity supply has improved for over 6.6 million people.

The director also stressed the unwavering interest of international organization donors in continuing to finance Ukraine's energy needs. She stated, “We are actively collaborating with the government in preparation for the upcoming heating season, understanding that it may prove to be even more challenging than the previous one.”

UNDP is focusing its support on the rapid expansion of decentralized and modular energy generation systems, including cogeneration plants, turbines, battery storage, and modular boilers. Additionally, the organization is facilitating the acceleration of renewable energy systems, such as solar installations for hospitals, schools, water supply enterprises, and centralized heating facilities.

The UN Development Programme is also actively working with partners to assist Ukraine in operationalizing the energy equipment provided. “We are already collaborating with partners to prepare sites for equipment installation, coordinating the work of engineering teams, ensuring compliance with safety standards and technical regulations, and facilitating integration into the energy system,” Zhivkovich noted.

She further emphasized that UNDP is aiding in the testing and commissioning of systems to ensure that the equipment operates effectively under real-world conditions. The programme also trains personnel in operation and maintenance to ensure that the support contributes to the long-term resilience of the energy system.

It is worth noting that on April 1, the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), agreed on a roadmap for cooperation for 2026 regarding the systematic recovery of territories and strengthening the capacity of local self-government.
