Ukrainian Railways Official Demands $100,000 from Company for Track Dismantling – Prosecutor General

The Deputy Director of the Ecological Safety Department at Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has come under scrutiny following allegations of corruption. Ruslan Kravchenko, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, revealed that the official solicited $100,000 from a representative of a granite production enterprise located in the Khmelnytskyi region. This payment was purportedly for resolving issues related to the dismantling and write-off of a railway track that was hindering the company's production expansion.

Kravchenko detailed the process that the official proposed, which included initiating a seasonal bypass to have the commission declare the railway track unprofitable. Following this, the track would be dismantled, written off, and removed from official registries. Additionally, there were discussions regarding transferring the land under the track to the local community for use in quarrying operations. The official assured that the procedure was complex and required approvals from the management of Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ministry of Infrastructure, and relevant departments. In return for the hefty sum, he promised to organize the entire process 'turnkey' within a timeframe of three to six months, citing his experience with similar operations at the Lviv Railway.

In a startling turn of events, Kravchenko reported that the official was apprehended while accepting the bribe. The prosecutor's office has since charged him under Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to receiving illegal benefits in particularly large amounts. Furthermore, a motion has been submitted to the court for the official's detention.
