Over Three Years in Iranian Prison: Macron Announces Release of Two French Citizens
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the release of two French nationals, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who spent more than three and a half years in an Iranian prison. They are now en route to France, bringing relief not only to themselves but also to their families.
French President Emmanuel Macron took to social media platform X to announce the release of two French citizens, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who had been imprisoned in Iran for over three and a half years. According to Macron, the two are currently making their way back to France, a development that has brought significant relief not only to the individuals involved but also to their families.
In his statement, Macron emphasized the significance of this moment, saying, "Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris are free and heading to French territory after three and a half years of imprisonment in Iran. This is a relief for all of us and, of course, for their families." He also expressed gratitude to the authorities in Oman for their mediating efforts that contributed to the release, as well as to the public servants and citizens who actively participated in the campaign to bring their compatriots home.
Cécile Kohler, a 41-year-old French language teacher and union activist, and 72-year-old retired Jacques Paris were detained during a tourist trip to Iran in May 2022. Following their arrest, they were held in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, known for its harsh conditions and repression. In October 2025, an Iranian court handed down severe sentences against them on charges of espionage and undermining national security, which France has repeatedly labeled as baseless and politically motivated.
It is important to note that in December 2025, both French citizens were released from Evin Prison; however, they remained within the premises of the French embassy in Tehran. The Iranian authorities had not permitted their exit from the country, raising concerns among their relatives and human rights advocates.
This situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving conflicts related to the detention of foreigners. The release of Kohler and Paris resulted from prolonged negotiations and efforts that involved not only France but also Iran, as well as mediators from other countries.
This case also draws attention to broader human rights issues in Iran, where many foreigners and local activists face similar charges that are often deemed unfounded. France, like many other nations, continues to call for respect for human rights and adherence to international norms in its dealings with Iran.
The release of Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris marks a significant step in restoring their lives and returning to normalcy in France. It also serves as a testament to the fact that the international community can achieve positive outcomes when it comes to protecting the rights of its citizens abroad.
