Start of Electric Locomotive Production by Alstom for Ukrzaliznytsia
French company Alstom Transport has announced the commencement of electric locomotive production ordered by Ukrzaliznytsia, marking a significant step in the collaboration between the two parties.
French company Alstom Transport has officially announced the start of production for electric locomotives ordered by Ukrzaliznytsia. This development is a crucial milestone in the partnership between the two entities, as Ukrainian enterprises will also be involved in supplying necessary components for the manufacturing process.
Currently, Alstom has completed the production of the chassis for the first dual-system electric locomotive, designated as UA8AC. This locomotive is scheduled to be delivered to Ukraine in early 2027, where it will undergo certification and resource testing. This information was shared by Ukrzaliznytsia on its official Facebook page.
Additionally, Alstom has already selected Ukrainian enterprises that will manufacture various components for the electric locomotives. This indicates Alstom's serious intent to localize production in Ukraine, which could significantly impact the country's economy.
Ukrzaliznytsia noted that after signing contracts for the supply of electric locomotives, it provided its French partners with a list of companies it collaborates with for the repair of locomotives and other rolling stock. Based on this list, specialists from Alstom Transport conducted monitoring and a competitive selection of Ukrainian suppliers who could participate in the localization of electric locomotive production.
In Ukraine, the production of components such as radio stations, locomotive safety systems, fire alarm systems, braking system elements, couplings, cabin heaters, seats, and sand delivery system parts is planned. This initiative will not only foster the development of Ukrainian industry but also create jobs for thousands of people.
Separate negotiations are ongoing regarding the production of wheels for the electric locomotives. This aspect is strategically important, as an electric locomotive changes its wheelset at least ten times during its lifecycle. Therefore, the ability to procure them in Ukraine is not only a matter of localization but also of stability and long-term cost savings, as emphasized by Ukrzaliznytsia.
According to the plans, the delivery of the entire batch of 55 electric locomotives is expected to be completed by May 2029. These new locomotives are based on the Traxx Hauler platform and will become the first European-manufactured freight electric locomotives in Ukraine's history.
The electric locomotives will operate on both alternating and direct current, making them more versatile and efficient in operation. In terms of specifications, the new locomotives significantly surpass existing models: their maximum power will reach up to 9000 kW, with a speed of up to 120 km/h, and the starting tractive effort will achieve 800 kN. Moreover, they will feature a modern engine control system and improved working conditions for locomotive crews.
Ukrzaliznytsia highlighted that this is the first large-scale procurement of electric locomotives in the company's history, reflecting serious intentions regarding the modernization of railway transport in Ukraine.
It is worth noting that the contract between Ukrzaliznytsia and Alstom Transport was signed in November 2025 following the results of an international tender conducted by the World Bank. Subsequently, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development joined the implementation of this project. The total value of the agreement amounts to 473 million euros.
