Ukrainian Scientists' First Close Encounter with Humpback Whales in Antarctica
Ukrainian researchers participating in the 31st Antarctic expedition had an extraordinary encounter with humpback whales near the Akademik Vernadsky station, marking a significant milestone in marine fauna studies in the region.
Ukrainian scientists, who are part of the 31st Antarctic expedition, experienced an impressive meeting with humpback whales that took place near the Akademik Vernadsky station. This event has become an important milestone in research on marine fauna in the region, as similar observations had not been conducted at such close proximity before.
The National Antarctic Scientific Center reported on this unique moment, highlighting its significance. Biologist Kyrylo Sulima, who participated in the expedition, went out to sea to conduct research on humpback whales. While working in the area near Peterman Island, he noticed several pairs of whales peacefully resting on the water's surface.
To collect skin and fat samples, the scientist used a crossbow and special darts. After successfully gathering the samples, Kyrylo continued to observe the whales, hoping for even more impressive moments. "At one point, several pairs disappeared, diving deep. There was about ten minutes of complete silence, and then suddenly the whales appeared right next to us. It was astonishing and unexpected!" shared his impressions the biologist from the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic expedition.
During the close encounter with the polar explorers, the humpback whales displayed their remarkable behavioral characteristics. They arched their backs and loudly spouted, exhaling through the blowhole on top of their heads. At the same time, jets of air and condensed water vapor shot upwards, creating a breathtaking spectacle. "In reality, these sounds are much louder. Of course, it was a bit unsettling to have such a close encounter. But the humpbacks surfaced very cautiously, probably trying to avoid contact with the boat," noted Kyrylo Sulima, describing his feelings during this unforgettable event.
In addition to the whales themselves, videos taken during the expedition also captured an interesting meteorological phenomenon known as a halo. This natural occurrence resembles a rainbow appearing near the sun and results from the accumulation of a large number of ice crystals in the atmosphere. Such observations not only add aesthetic beauty to scientific research but also emphasize the importance of studying natural phenomena in Antarctica.
The National Antarctic Scientific Center continues its work in the region, researching not only marine fauna but also meteorological phenomena occurring in this unique natural environment. This expedition represents an important step in studying the Antarctic ecosystem and its inhabitants, as well as understanding the impact of climate change on these remote regions of the planet.
