Ukrainian Security Service Detains Russian Agent Who Adjusted Strikes on Ukrainian Railways
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the arrest of a Russian agent tasked with adjusting artillery strikes on Ukrainian Railways. The individual, a jobless resident of Poltava, was recruited by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) after seeking 'easy earnings' in Telegram channels.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported a significant development in its ongoing efforts to counteract espionage and sabotage activities within the country. Authorities have detained a Russian agent who was allegedly involved in adjusting artillery strikes targeting the Ukrainian railway system. This arrest highlights the persistent threats facing Ukraine amid ongoing conflict and underscores the critical role of the SBU in national security.
According to investigations, the arrested individual, a resident of Poltava without employment, was approached and recruited by the FSB after he began searching for quick financial opportunities in various Telegram channels. Following his recruitment, the agent relocated to the Volyn region, where he rented an apartment near a railway station. In his temporary residence, he installed a phone camera that provided live streaming capabilities to Russian intelligence services, allowing the FSB to monitor the arrival times of moving trains. This information was crucial for planning targeted strikes against these railway assets.
Operatives from the military counterintelligence division of the SBU documented the espionage activities of the Russian agent and subsequently apprehended him. During a search of the suspect's apartment, several smartphones were seized, which he had been using to communicate with the FSB and to record video footage of the moving trains.
Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the agent had also conducted intelligence operations in the Poltava region, where he was monitoring the locations of mobile fire groups belonging to Ukrainian defense forces. To maintain communication security, the agent and his FSB handler employed pre-arranged code words and icons within an anonymous messaging app chat.
In light of these findings, SBU investigators have officially charged the detained individual under part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses treason committed under martial law conditions. The suspect is currently in custody, facing the possibility of life imprisonment along with asset confiscation.
This incident is not isolated. Earlier, as reported by Ukrinform, a Ukrainian citizen was sentenced to 15 years in prison for providing Russian intelligence with the coordinates of military facilities in the capital. These events underscore the serious threats that Ukraine faces during wartime and the importance of the SBU's activities in combating espionage and betrayal.
The Security Service of Ukraine continues its work aimed at identifying and neutralizing agents of Russian intelligence services attempting to inflict harm on the Ukrainian state. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may indicate the presence of hostile agents.
