Russian Forces Drop Fake Money with Dangerous QR Codes in Chernihiv and Sumy Regions
On April 2, 2023, Russian military forces dropped counterfeit 100-hryvnia banknotes in the border areas of Chernihiv and Sumy, raising alarms among local residents due to the presence of a QR code linked to a channel offering 'news and real money.'
In the border areas of Chernihiv and Sumy, incidents of Russian troops dropping fake 100-hryvnia banknotes were recorded on April 2, 2023. These leaflets, released from drones, have sparked concern among the local population, as they feature a QR code that leads to a channel where Russians promote 'news and real money.'
Pavlo Miroshnychenko, the head of the Koryukivka District Military Administration, and Artem Kobzar, the acting mayor of Sumy, reported this dangerous situation via social media, urging residents to exercise caution and not to fall for provocations. Local authorities clearly stated: 'This is not money. This is danger! We ask everyone: do not touch such 'gifts' and do not scan them. Be careful with suspicious items.'
According to information, the banknotes that were dropped contain a QR code that could lead to unwanted consequences for those who decide to scan it. Acting mayor Artem Kobzar added that if such items are discovered, local residents should immediately notify the police or the State Emergency Service (SES) to avoid potential dangers.
This incident is not isolated. In September 2025, similar leaflets in the form of 100-hryvnia banknotes were also found in one of the neighborhoods of Chernihiv, which the Russians dropped from a drone. At that time, the enemy attempted to encourage local residents to share coordinates and assist in targeting the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thus, these actions indicate a continuation of the information and psychological warfare by Russian troops.
Local residents who witnessed these events expressed concern about safety in the region. They noted that such provocations could incite panic among the population, especially among those who lack sufficient information about what is happening. Therefore, it is crucial for local authorities to continue informing the public about possible threats and ways to avoid them.
In the context of a war that has been ongoing for several years, such incidents underscore the need for vigilance and caution among the population. Local authorities urge all residents to adhere to safety measures and not to succumb to provocations that could threaten their lives and health.
