Language Ombudsman: Even Non-Advertising Videos on Social Media Must Be in Ukrainian
Oлена Івановська, the Language Ombudsman of Ukraine, has emphasized that all content on social media pages of businesses, regardless of whether it is advertising, must be presented in the state language or include a complete Ukrainian version.
Oлена Івановська, the appointed official responsible for the protection of the state language in Ukraine, has made a significant statement regarding the use of the Ukrainian language in online business representations. She asserts that all content, including videos, on social media pages of shops must be provided in Ukrainian, irrespective of whether the video is promotional in nature or not.
In her statement, Івановська highlighted the legal framework surrounding this requirement, referencing the law titled 'On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language.' This law mandates that the language of service for consumers is the state language. She pointed out that businesses are obligated to provide information about their goods and services in Ukrainian, particularly through online shops and social media platforms.
Furthermore, Івановська clarified that internet representations, which include pages on popular platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, must also comply with this language requirement. This means that any content shared on these platforms should be in Ukrainian to align with the legal stipulations.
In addition to the primary requirement for Ukrainian language usage, Івановська noted that other language versions may exist. However, she emphasized that the Ukrainian version must be equal in volume and content to any other language versions and should be readily accessible by default for users in Ukraine.
“Thus, regardless of whether the video is direct advertising, the content on the shop's page—including audio, text in videos, and written posts—must be presented in the state language or must necessarily include a complete Ukrainian version,” the Language Ombudsman stressed.
This statement comes at a time when the promotion of the Ukrainian language is crucial, especially in the context of ongoing efforts to strengthen national identity and cultural heritage. The emphasis on using Ukrainian in all business communications reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that the state language is not only preserved but also actively promoted in all spheres of public life.
As businesses navigate the digital landscape, adherence to these language requirements will not only fulfill legal obligations but also resonate with consumers who value the use of the Ukrainian language. The call for compliance is a reminder of the importance of cultural representation in the marketplace and the role of language in fostering a sense of community and belonging among consumers.
In conclusion, the Language Ombudsman's directive serves as a clear guideline for businesses operating in Ukraine, reinforcing the necessity of using the state language across all platforms and ensuring that Ukrainian remains a vibrant part of the country’s commercial and cultural fabric.
