Mircea Lucescu Faces Serious Health Issues, Doctors Sound Alarm
Renowned Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, who previously managed Kyiv's Dynamo and Donetsk's Shakhtar, is facing severe health problems that have raised significant concerns among medical professionals.
Mircea Lucescu, the Romanian football coach known for his successful stints with Kyiv's Dynamo and Donetsk's Shakhtar, is currently grappling with serious health issues. According to cardiologist Stefan Busnatu, Lucescu's condition is alarming due to multiple organ impairments, specifically affecting his heart, brain, and lungs.
Dr. Busnatu reported that a recent computed tomography (CT) scan revealed that not only is the coach's heart extremely weakened, but there are also significant issues with his brain and lungs. This indicates the presence of blood clots that adversely affect several organs simultaneously. Busnatu emphasized that such a condition is very serious, significantly increasing the risks to the patient's life.
“Unfortunately, multiple organs are affected — the heart, brain, and lungs — therefore the risks are considerably heightened. Even the use of a heart-lung machine (ECMO) could be dangerous,” the doctor noted. He also added that, given the existing blood clots, the risks associated with the procedure might outweigh any potential benefits.
Mircea Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after feeling unwell during the Romanian national team's training camp, which followed their 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the playoff qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Just a few days later, on April 2, Lucescu stepped down from his position as head coach of the Romanian team.
Tragically, on April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction while still in the hospital. Medical personnel had to perform resuscitation procedures three times, and the coach underwent his fifth stent placement. Following this, he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe cardiac arrhythmias that were resistant to treatment.
During the CT scan, numerous signs of ischemic cerebral strokes were found, as well as inflammation from pulmonary thromboembolism, which further complicates his condition.
For 15 years, Mircea Lucescu worked in Ukraine, where he gained immense popularity leading both Dynamo and Shakhtar. With Shakhtar, he won the Ukrainian championship eight times and claimed the UEFA Cup in 2009. With Dynamo, he secured the Ukrainian Premier League title in the 2020/21 season.
In the 2016/17 season, Lucescu managed the Russian club Zenit. He has previously spoken about his home in Donetsk, which he was forced to leave due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. His health situation is causing concern not only among the football community but also among all who have followed his career and life.
