Ukrainian Forests to Resume Construction of 25 Roads in April, Reducing Timber Harvesting Costs by 20%

The state enterprise 'Ukrainian Forests' is set to resume the construction of 25 forest roads in April, covering nearly 90 kilometers, which is expected to lower timber harvesting costs by 20%.

The state enterprise 'Ukrainian Forests' announced on its Facebook page that it will resume the implementation of 25 projects for the construction of forest roads starting in April. These roads will span a total length of nearly 90 kilometers, marking a significant step in improving the efficiency of timber harvesting in the region.

According to the company's statement, the construction of these projects began in the fall of 2025 across several regions, including the Carpathian, Northern, Podilsk, Polissia, and Kyiv branches. Work on these projects was temporarily halted during the winter months, but contractors are now returning to complete the tasks at hand.

During the construction of the forest roads, intermediate storage facilities will be established for the storage, sorting, and unloading of timber products. Additionally, road signs and signal posts will be installed. The implementation of these projects will take into account economic and social factors, as well as ensure fire safety measures are in place, as detailed by 'Ukrainian Forests'.

As per the information provided by the state enterprise, a new road in the Nadvirna forestry area, extending over 2 kilometers, will provide access to timber reserves estimated at 22,700 cubic meters. In the Korosten forestry area, the completion of a 3-kilometer road will allow timber trucks to reduce their routes by 10 kilometers. It is anticipated that this logistical optimization will reduce the cost of one cubic meter of timber in this area by approximately 20%.

'Ukrainian Forests' further clarified that the construction in the Putyla forestry area will shorten the distance for residents of mountainous settlements to the district center by 10 kilometers. Additionally, a major repair of the road in the Mekshuniv forestry (Chernihiv region) will ensure that fire-fighting vehicles can access a nearby water body, which will be equipped with a pier for rapid water intake.

Overall, the state enterprise has ambitious plans for 2026, aiming to construct 60 forest roads with a total length exceeding 200 kilometers. This initiative is expected to enhance the logistical framework for timber harvesting and improve accessibility for local communities, thereby contributing to the sustainable management of forest resources in Ukraine.
