Erdogan Offers Istanbul for Peace Talks, Zelensky Agrees to New Security Cooperation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have reached a consensus on advancing security and energy cooperation after engaging in high-level discussions in Istanbul on Saturday, April 4. This significant development was reported by the Office of the President of Ukraine following the meeting between the two leaders.

During the talks, Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey's readiness to play a leading role in achieving sustainable peace and proposed hosting a new round of negotiations involving delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. This offer underscores Turkey's strategic position as a mediator in the ongoing conflict.

Responding to Erdogan's proposal, Zelensky stated, "Erdogan suggests holding peace talks in Istanbul; we are ready to come." This statement came after Zelensky's meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, which occurred immediately following his discussions with Erdogan.

The leaders also delved into practical steps for joint projects in gas infrastructure and the development of gas fields. Zelensky emphasized that teams from both nations would finalize the details of these agreements in the coming days, showcasing a commitment to enhancing bilateral energy cooperation.

In a message on Telegram, Zelensky remarked, "We have agreed on new steps in the field of security cooperation. This primarily concerns areas where we can support Turkey: expertise, technology, and experience." He expressed gratitude to the Turkish people for their unwavering support of Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity, highlighting the importance of international solidarity in times of conflict.
