Elite Real Estate Worth 13 Million: MP Charged with Illegal Enrichment
The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office has announced charges against a member of the Ukrainian Parliament for illegal enrichment, revealing significant discrepancies between his declared income and asset acquisitions.
According to the information agency Ukrinform, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) has formally charged a member of the IX convocation of the Ukrainian Parliament with illegal enrichment. The prosecution claims that the suspect acquired assets from 2020 to 2021 that exceed his lawful income by more than 12.7 million hryvnias.
Specifically, the allegations include a 132.6 square meter apartment located in the center of Kyiv, valued at 5.632 million hryvnias. In addition to this, the MP reportedly spent 5.656 million hryvnias on luxurious renovations and furnishings for the apartment. His assets also comprise a cottage and a land plot in the resort village of Koblevo, with a total value of 1.694 million hryvnias.
Investigators have determined that despite the property being fictitiously registered in the name of an acquaintance, the member of Parliament has been residing in the aforementioned Kyiv apartment since December 2021. He personally oversaw all renovation work and paid for it in cash, indicating his actual ownership of the property.
The charges were announced in accordance with Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to illegal enrichment. Media reports indicate that the suspect is Oleksandr Kachnyi, a member of Parliament from the banned political party “Opposition Platform - For Life.”
This case is not isolated in the context of Ukraine's fight against corruption. Previously, an indictment was sent to court regarding a former official of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service in the Zaporizhzhia region, who is accused of illegal enrichment amounting to 13 million hryvnias. These cases underscore the importance of anti-corruption efforts in the country, especially as society demands transparency and accountability from public officials.
