Ukrainian Armed Forces Adjust Training to Counter Russian Drones - Syrsky
General Oleksandr Syrsky, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, emphasized the critical need for enhanced military training in light of the significant advantages held by the enemy in personnel and equipment.
General Oleksandr Syrsky, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, highlighted in a recent Facebook post that the ongoing conflict has necessitated a critical focus on improving the quality of military training, preserving the lives of soldiers, and effectively utilizing available weaponry. In a situation where the enemy possesses considerable superiority in both personnel and technology, these factors have become paramount for the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Syrsky stressed that the nature of warfare is evolving daily, which requires constant attention to basic military training. During a working meeting, it was decided to make adjustments to the training content, particularly in relation to combating enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and to enhance the technological component of the training. The focus will be on working with UAVs and countering hostile drones, which is particularly relevant given the current combat conditions.
The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is actively analyzing feedback from cadets, which allows for the improvement of training quality, enhancement of programs, and upgrading of the logistical base. Special attention is being given to individual training, which is also a crucial aspect for increasing the combat readiness of military personnel.
Furthermore, the process of decentralizing training grounds and centers is ongoing, with relocations to safer areas to reduce risks for soldiers during training exercises. According to Syrsky, currently, 68 military units are conducting basic military training at their facilities. Some brigades have been training newcomers with their own resources for an extended period, while others have only recently begun this work. The key point emphasized by Syrsky is the results and quality of the training.
During the meeting, the Commander-in-Chief received updates from combat units. The 3rd Assault Brigade and the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade showcased their positive developments in training military personnel, sharing their experiences and successes.
"We see problematic issues. We are developing and implementing solutions. At the same time, our partners recognize the high level of training of the Ukrainian military and are adopting our experience," Syrsky emphasized, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in military training.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine clarified that during basic military training, key aspects that are critically important in modern warfare are studied. Starting from July 2025, all training centers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will implement an updated sixth edition of the basic military training program. The duration of the course has been extended to 51 days, with additional time specifically allocated to enhance training in countering enemy drones.
This decision is driven by the realities of intense combat, as modern warfare demands deeper knowledge, greater practical experience, and readiness to face technological challenges on the battlefield from every soldier. The primary goal of basic military training is not only to provide a theoretical foundation but also to develop survival skills and effective combat operations under stress, the ministry explained.
In total, out of 402 training hours, 367 hours are dedicated exclusively to practical exercises under the guidance of instructors, underscoring the emphasis on practical training for military personnel.
