Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, during which both leaders expressed a significant interest in exchanging military and security experiences between their two nations. This meeting took place against the backdrop of current security challenges faced by both countries, as well as the ongoing situation in the region.
Commenting on the outcomes of the meeting, Zelensky noted that the leaders agreed to work together to ensure greater security and development for the societies of both countries. He emphasized the importance of cooperation in a time when the region is facing numerous challenges and expressed gratitude for the support Ukraine receives in its struggle against aggression from Russia.
The presidents also discussed the regional situation and potential prospects for improvement. Zelensky highlighted the importance of sharing experiences in military and security fields, stating, "There is great interest in exchanging military and security experiences. Thank you for your words of respect for our people."
Additionally, during the meeting, the leaders touched upon the issue of food security. Zelensky stressed Ukraine's role as a reliable supplier of food products, emphasizing that both countries could work together to strengthen food security in the region. "We understand very well the energy and infrastructure challenges that Syria is currently facing. We are ready to work together to enhance the capabilities of our states and peoples," he added.
This meeting was a significant event, as Zelensky had recently arrived in Syria, where he planned to conduct a series of important discussions. It is noteworthy that relations between Ukraine and Syria have undergone changes in recent years, particularly following the signing of a Joint Communique on the restoration of diplomatic relations in September 2025.
It is important to recall that in December 2024, significant political changes occurred in Syria when President Bashar al-Assad's regime was overthrown. Following this, according to information published by The Guardian, the Assad family fled to Russia and settled in the elite suburban area of Rublyovka. The former president himself, according to sources, continues to engage in ophthalmology.
Thus, Zelensky's meeting with al-Sharaa not only underscored the importance of cooperation between Ukraine and Syria but also opened new opportunities for exchanging experiences in the areas of security and food, which are pressing issues for both countries in today's world.
