Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a significant announcement inviting an American negotiation delegation to visit Kyiv. According to the head of state, Ukraine plans to submit its responses regarding security guarantees to a developed document in the coming days. This initiative is part of Ukraine's efforts to strengthen its position in the context of the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Zelensky shared his thoughts during a press briefing on April 1. He noted that the invitation to the American delegation is seen as an alternative to a trilateral meeting, which is currently complicated by conflicts in other regions. 'I invited the American negotiation delegation to Kyiv. The delegation will do everything possible under the current conditions—during the war with Iran—to come to Kyiv. This is an alternative option to a trilateral meeting at the level of technical groups. The American group can come to us and then go to Moscow. If we can't meet in threes, let's do it in turns. This is our proposal,' said the president.
Volodymyr Zelensky also emphasized that he has already received positive signals from partners regarding this initiative. He stressed the importance of a clear understanding of the content of agreements regarding security guarantees for Ukraine. 'This is very important. We do not know if we will receive what we agreed upon, but the agreement is this: in the coming days, Ukraine will write its responses to the developed document regarding the questions we have about these security guarantees. There must be a clear answer regarding what America's reaction will be in the event of new aggression from Russia,' he stated.
It is worth noting that on April 1, Zelensky also reported on his negotiations with American representatives, including Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Senator Lindsey Graham, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The head of state emphasized that the conversation was positive, and the parties agreed to enhance security guarantees for Ukraine.
In an interview with Reuters published on March 25, Zelensky noted that the United States is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees on the condition that the Defense Forces withdraw from Donbas. These remarks sparked mixed reactions, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling the Ukrainian president's statements a lie.
In response to Rubio's criticism, Zelensky explained that Ukraine sought to sign security guarantees even before the end of the war, and the relevant agreements were nearly ready. However, the U.S. stated that this would only be possible after the cessation of hostilities. This situation highlights the complexity of international relations and the need for clear agreements in the context of Ukraine's security.
Thus, the invitation to the American delegation to Kyiv represents an important step towards strengthening security guarantees for Ukraine and indicates an intensification of diplomatic efforts in this direction. The Ukrainian side continues to work on ensuring its national interests in the challenging conditions of modern geopolitics.
