Zelensky Calls on EU to Create Military Bloc to Deter Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the European Union to unite with Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Norway to form a military bloc capable of countering the Russian Federation.
During a recent podcast with Alistair Campbell titled The Rest is Politics, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his belief that the European Union must consolidate its efforts alongside Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Norway to establish a military bloc that would be strong enough to deter the Russian Federation. This information was reported by Ukrinform, citing The Guardian.
Zelensky emphasized that without the involvement of Ukraine and Turkey, Europe would not be able to create a military force that could compete with Russia. He stated, “Without Ukraine and Turkey, Europe will not have an army comparable to that of Russia. With Ukraine, Turkey, Norway, and the United Kingdom, you will control security at sea, not just on one sea.” These remarks highlight the importance of international cooperation in ensuring security within the region.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian leader expressed confidence that Ukraine will eventually become a member of the European Union. This aspect of his statements underscores Ukraine's aspiration to integrate into European structures and strengthen its position on the international stage.
During the podcast, Zelensky also commented on the visit of U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance to Budapest, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the President, the purpose of this visit was to advocate for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which he characterized as “unhelpful.” Zelensky stressed that he does not intend to interfere in the upcoming elections in Hungary, emphasizing that it is the Hungarian people who should decide which political force to support.
It is noteworthy that during a joint press conference with Viktor Orban, U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance stated that there are “elements” within Ukrainian intelligence services attempting to interfere in elections both in the United States and Hungary. This statement provoked a certain reaction within Ukraine.
Georgiy Tikhiy, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, commented on the words of the U.S. Vice President, noting that they are part of the electoral rhetoric. He emphasized that the Ukrainian side perceives these statements without excessive emotion and does not exaggerate their significance. This indicates a calm approach of Ukrainian diplomacy to the evolving situation.
It is important to note that such statements on the international stage underscore the complexities of modern political relations and the necessity for constructive dialogue between countries. Ukraine continues to seek support from its international partners, particularly in the context of security and defense.
