Zelensky Proposes Maritime Assistance for Ukraine Amid UN Debates on the Strait of Hormuz

In a late-night video address on April 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's experience in safeguarding maritime routes in the Black Sea during its ongoing conflict with Russia, proposing assistance to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

In his late-night video address on April 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted Ukraine's extensive experience in protecting maritime routes in the Black Sea, which has been a focal point of conflict for over four years due to the ongoing war with Russia. Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine has taken significant measures to maintain the openness of maritime routes and has developed technologies, such as maritime drones, which could be beneficial for countries seeking to restore safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Zelensky's proposal came after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga participated in a virtual meeting with representatives from approximately 40 countries, focusing on the reopening of the Strait, one of the world's most critical energy corridors. These discussions are part of a broader diplomatic initiative, partially supported by the United Kingdom and Arab states, aimed at ensuring commercial shipping operations without escalating regional tensions.

Furthermore, Zelensky announced that Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, will present a detailed report on April 3 regarding the week's efforts with Gulf countries and Turkey. This report aims to shed light on Ukraine's initiatives to ensure the security of maritime transportation and its collaboration with international partners.

At the same time, the United Nations Security Council was preparing for a vote on a resolution drafted by Bahrain, which would allow the use of 'defensive' forces to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz from Iranian attacks, according to information from AFP. The resolution text, which has received backing from the United States, underwent several amendments prior to the vote.

This initiative highlights the increasing tensions in the region, where Iran has intensified its control over this key shipping route in response to actions taken by the United States. Commenting on the situation, Zelensky noted that Russia's actions in Ukraine have global repercussions, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. He warned that Russia's aggressive actions could lead to new conflicts and exacerbate the situation in these regions.

Zelensky also underscored the importance of international cooperation to ensure maritime security and regional stability. He urged countries around the world to unite their efforts to counter threats that may arise from the aggressive actions of certain states. This call to action reflects both Ukraine's internal challenges and the global security issues that the world is facing today.
