Zelensky Proposes Energy Ceasefire, Criticizes Russia for Ignoring Peace Offer on Easter
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a ceasefire aimed at halting attacks on the energy sector during his daily address to the nation, while criticizing Russia for disregarding peace proposals during Easter.
In a significant address to the Ukrainian people on Monday, March 6, President Volodymyr Zelensky put forth a proposal for a ceasefire specifically targeting attacks on the energy sector. This initiative has been communicated to American intermediaries, who reportedly relayed it to the Russian side.
"If Russia is ready to cease attacks on our energy sector, we will also refrain from similar attacks," Zelensky stated during his speech, highlighting Ukraine's commitment to peace amidst ongoing conflict.
During his address, the president reminded listeners of Russia's repeated proposals for a ceasefire, particularly during Easter, which he described as "this special time of year." However, he lamented that "for Russia, all times seem the same, and nothing is sacred." This remark underscores the stark contrast between Ukraine's desire for peace and Russia's apparent indifference.
Zelensky further elaborated that Ukraine is actively working on documents with the American side to strengthen security guarantee agreements. He expressed gratitude to international partners for their continued support, which includes pressing Russia through sanctions, halting tankers, and imposing restrictions on the supply of modern equipment to Russia.
Despite Russia's "unwillingness" to engage, Ukraine remains steadfast in its proposal for a ceasefire during Easter, as President Zelensky emphasized at the end of last week, noting that Kyiv has transmitted the plan to Washington for delivery to Moscow.
"We have all seen their reaction in the media: it seems they are not ready for this. I do not know how serious this is. We have conveyed our request to the American side," Zelensky remarked, indicating the uncertainty surrounding Russia's response.
"I do not know if they had the opportunity to contact the Russians. We will see. Our proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remains in effect," he added, maintaining hope for a peaceful resolution.
Zelensky's address followed a Russian drone attack that involved 339 drones on April 6, highlighting the alarming situation in Ukraine, where the war has persisted for five years. The president's efforts towards peace initiatives are continually met with persistent aggression from Russia.
