Zelensky Reports Delay in Negotiations with Russia, Signaling Willingness to Meet with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in an interview with Italian television channel Rai on Wednesday, April 9, that negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States have been postponed. This delay comes as Washington's focus has shifted towards the situation in the Middle East, which Zelensky indicated has caused setbacks in diplomatic efforts related to Ukraine.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of continuing military support for Ukraine, noting that talks with Russia will resume at a later date. He expressed hope that a ceasefire agreement reached with the involvement of Iran could help alleviate global energy pressures.
“Support for Ukraine, including the supply of weapons, must continue,” Zelensky stressed, adding that negotiations “will be resumed.” He also stated his readiness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin but ruled out the possibility of holding talks in Kyiv or Moscow.
“I am ready to meet with Putin… There are many places where we could meet – in the Middle East, in Europe, in the United States, anywhere,” he said. Zelensky dismissed any discussions regarding concessions to Russia in the Donbas region, asserting that if Ukraine were to leave Donbas under Russian control, it would allow Russia to advance further without incurring losses.
“They could attack Kharkiv and other key cities,” Zelensky noted, adding that any territorial concessions could threaten Ukraine's internal unity and independence.
Earlier in the week, Zelensky proposed a ceasefire for Easter, which would include a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure. He emphasized that while he prefers a long-term truce, short-term compromises could be possible if Ukraine's “dignity and sovereignty” are respected. Zelensky also mentioned that Ukraine remains committed to its Easter ceasefire proposal, despite Russia's “unwillingness.”
Additionally, it is worth noting that Ukrainian drones struck a significant oil pipeline station in Russia's Krasnodar region, causing fires and explosions, and further strikes on military facilities were also reported. “We all saw their reaction in the media: they seem unprepared for this. I don’t know how serious it is. We have conveyed our request to the American side,” Zelensky added.
