Zelensky Announces New Security Agreements with Erdogan
On Sunday, October 15, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul to discuss new steps in security cooperation, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between Ukraine and Turkey.
During the meeting, President Zelensky emphasized that a fundamental agreement was reached regarding new initiatives that pertain not only to security but also to technological cooperation. He highlighted that Ukrainian expertise, technologies, and experience could significantly support Turkey across various sectors. 'We agreed on new steps in security cooperation. This primarily concerns those areas where we can support Turkey: expertise, technologies, experience,' Zelensky stated on his social media platforms.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Europe and the Middle East, which are critical aspects for both nations. Zelensky stressed that there is a political willingness to work together, and teams from both presidents are set to finalize the details of joint projects in the coming days. 'There is a fundamental political readiness to work together, and our teams will finalize the details in the coming days,' he added.
In addition to security issues, the presidents talked about practical steps for implementing joint projects in the energy sector, particularly in the development of gas infrastructure. 'We discussed practical steps for the implementation of joint projects in the development of gas infrastructure, as well as opportunities for joint exploration of gas fields,' noted Zelensky. This indicates the intention of both Ukraine and Turkey not only to strengthen their security positions but also to enhance cooperation in the energy sector.
It is important to note that the meeting between Zelensky and Erdogan took place against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical challenges faced by both countries. Turkey, as a strategic partner of Ukraine, actively supports Kyiv in its aspirations for European integration and strengthening its defense capabilities. Conversely, Ukraine views Turkey as an important ally in the region that can assist in addressing numerous security and economic issues.
Zelensky arrived in Istanbul on Saturday, October 14, to conduct this crucial meeting with Erdogan. Both presidents hope that the agreements reached will serve as a foundation for the further development of bilateral relations and contribute to stability in the region.
