Zelensky Discusses Situation in Ukraine with Pope Leo XIV Amid New Russian Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a conversation with Pope Leo XIV on April 3, addressing critical issues related to the ongoing war in Ukraine, particularly in light of new Russian assaults.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in a significant dialogue with Pope Leo XIV on April 3, where they discussed pressing matters concerning the war in Ukraine. This conversation occurred against the backdrop of renewed attacks by Russia, which once again showcased its aggression by launching hundreds of kamikaze drones and dozens of missiles targeting Ukrainian cities.

In his remarks, Zelensky emphasized that the assault had been ongoing since the night before, affecting at least five regions of Ukraine. He stated, "Not a single hour of peace for our people, and this is Russia's response to our proposal for a ceasefire on Easter. In fact, the Russians have only intensified their strikes, and instead of silence in the skies, they are creating an Easter escalation." This highlights the relentless military actions of the aggressor, underscoring the dire situation faced by the Ukrainian populace.

During the conversation with the Pope, Zelensky also touched upon the negotiation process and collaboration with the American team. He expressed gratitude to the Vatican for its support in the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as for the humanitarian assistance provided to Ukraine, particularly during the harsh winter months.

"We also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region," he noted, emphasizing the importance of international support amid the ongoing war. Zelensky extended his wishes for the Holy Father and the faithful celebrating Easter this Sunday to have a blessed holiday filled with peace.

"Of course, we would be delighted to see His Holiness in Ukraine on an apostolic visit. I am especially grateful that the Pope remembers Ukraine, Ukrainians, and prays for peace for our people," the Ukrainian leader added, highlighting the significance of spiritual support during these challenging times.

Earlier on April 3, Zelensky stated that Ukraine's proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remains valid. "We have all seen their response in the media space: they (the Russians) seem to be unprepared for this. I do not know how serious this response is. We have conveyed our request to the American side. I do not know if they will have the opportunity to send their message to the 'Ruskies'. We will see. Our proposal for a ceasefire on Easter remains," he asserted, reiterating Ukraine's readiness for peace negotiations.

On March 30, the Ukrainian president commented to journalists that he is open to any format of a ceasefire, including during Easter. However, on March 31, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, while commenting on Zelensky's proposal for an Easter ceasefire, stated that Russia "did not see a clearly formulated initiative." The Kremlin traditionally rejected the ceasefire and asserted that Zelensky "must take responsibility and make the necessary decisions for us to achieve peace, not just a truce."
