Zelensky: We have submitted a proposal for an Easter ceasefire to the Americans
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday, March 30, that Ukraine has submitted a request to the United States regarding the possibility of an Easter ceasefire. However, he noted that it remains unclear whether the American side can convey this message to Russia.
During a meeting with journalists on Thursday, March 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Ukraine has formally conveyed a request to the United States regarding the potential for a ceasefire during the Easter holiday. Zelensky emphasized that, as of now, it is uncertain whether the American officials will be able to relay this proposal to the Russian side.
Zelensky stated, "We have all seen in the media their (Russian – ed.) response: they seem to be unprepared for this. I do not know how serious this response is. We have submitted our request to the American side. I do not know if they will have the opportunity to convey their message to the Russians. We will see. Our proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remains."
Additionally, on March 30, President Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's readiness for a ceasefire during the Easter celebrations, as well as for an energy truce. He underscored that, in his view, decent people who respect life should discuss a ceasefire and a long-term end to the war, rather than just a temporary pause. "However, we are certainly ready for any compromises, except for compromises with our dignity and sovereignty," he added.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov made it clear that the Kremlin does not support Zelensky's proposal for a ceasefire during the Easter holidays. He explained that the proposed ceasefire is not "clearly formulated," which excludes the possibility of its implementation. This statement indicates that Russia is not willing to make compromises that could be perceived as a sign of weakness.
This situation highlights the complexities of the diplomatic efforts that Ukraine is attempting amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. It is important to note that the issue of a ceasefire during holidays has always sparked lively discussions, as both sides of the conflict have differing views on what is acceptable in the context of a truce.
As the war continues for over a year, the Ukrainian side continues to seek opportunities for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, as practice shows, achieving peace requires not only willingness but also the readiness of both sides to engage in dialogue and make concessions. Therefore, the subsequent steps taken by Ukraine and the international community's response to their initiatives remain in the spotlight.
