Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on April 7 that preparations are currently in progress for the European segment of security proposals that were presented and accepted during his negotiations in the Middle East, particularly in the Gulf countries. This initiative comes at a crucial time as the region faces significant security challenges exacerbated by ongoing conflicts.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of these proposals in the context of war, noting that the protection of countries in the region required urgent response and expertise, which Ukraine successfully provided. 'We ensured this — Ukrainian expertise has proven effective, and everyone acknowledges it. As a result, there are long-term agreements on cooperation, specifically regarding security collaboration,' the president stated.
The significance of developing such cooperation in Europe was also highlighted by Zelensky. 'The coming weeks will be dedicated to this very work with our partners in Europe: our joint productions, our defense modernization, defense financing programs, and coordination in security actions,' he added, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in the security sphere.
On April 5, President Zelensky made his first visit to the capital of Syria, Damascus, where he held talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. During the meeting, various topics were discussed, including security and defense issues, as well as the regional situation in the context of events surrounding Iran, energy, and infrastructure cooperation between the countries.
It is noteworthy that at the end of March and the beginning of April 2026, Volodymyr Zelensky undertook a series of working visits to the Middle East, during which he visited Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan. These visits marked significant milestones in the development of Ukraine's international relations with countries in the region.
Following his tour of the Middle Eastern countries, President Zelensky also visited Turkey, reflecting Ukraine's active diplomatic engagement on the international stage. The president's efforts in the fields of security and defense, as well as his commitment to enhancing cooperation with European partners, underscore Ukraine's importance in the context of global security.
