President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered a major expansion in the production and deployment of ground robotic systems, setting a target of at least 50,000 units for Ukraine’s military this year.
Speaking after a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Zelensky described unmanned ground systems as the “next major step” in warfare, following the widespread use of drones.

“It is already impossible to imagine defense without drones – and the same applies to ground robotic systems,” he said, adding that they are crucial for logistics, evacuating wounded soldiers and combat operations.
Zelensky said the defense minister and General Staff have been tasked with meeting the target, stressing that such systems are “about protecting lives.” He noted that contracts for ground robotic systems this year already exceed last year’s volume by more than twofold, but said production must continue to grow.
Alongside battlefield technologies, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine’s air and missile defense. He said Kyiv is actively seeking anti-ballistic systems and alternatives, warning that global developments – including conflict involving Iran – are complicating the supply of interceptor missiles.
Zelensky also highlighted recent contributions from European countries to defense programs, with additional support expected in May, and said Ukraine is working toward long-term solutions, including developing its own anti-ballistic capabilities in cooperation with trusted partners.

Merz Says Ukraine’s EU Path Key to Ending War With Russia
The German chancellor said deeper EU integration for Ukraine could be crucial to securing public support for a future peace deal with Russia in which Kyiv might be forced to vote on ceding lands.
The president underscored broader progress in Ukraine’s defense industry, pointing to the production of millions of drones, long-range strike systems, domestically produced artillery and ammunition – capabilities that did not exist at scale before the war.
“Now we are producing them in the volumes needed, and they are having a real impact on the battlefield,” he said.
Zelensky said Ukraine’s long-term goal is to build a full spectrum of key weapons systems while expanding joint production programs with international partners. He added that recent agreements in the Middle East, the Gulf, the Caucasus and the European Union are already delivering financial support, fuel supplies and energy cooperation.
He also stressed that Ukraine’s defense contributes to broader global stability and warned partners not to lose sight of the bigger picture.
“Ukraine is not only defending itself,” he said. “If Russia succeeds against one country, it will move against others.”
Zelensky cited Moscow’s actions in Moldova, Georgia, Crimea, Donbas and Belarus as part of a pattern of expansion that can only be stopped through “real strength and principled action” from allies.
He called on both the United States and European nations to ensure strong support for Ukraine, including security guarantees, respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity, EU membership prospects and sustained reconstruction efforts.
“We are working for a just peace,” Zelensky said. “Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine.”
