A customs inspector from Lviv has been taken into custody after a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a military officer from the Territorial Recruitment Center (TCC) in Lviv. The inspector has received an official charge of intentional murder, according to a statement released by the Office of the Prosecutor General on Friday, April 3.

Currently, authorities are considering the imposition of a preventive measure in the form of detention for the suspect, as well as his suspension from service. This decision is part of the ongoing investigation into this horrific crime.

According to the investigation, the tragic incident occurred on April 2 at approximately 1:30 PM on Paton Street in Lviv. A 52-year-old military serviceman from the TCC was fatally wounded by a knife to the neck. Military personnel from the Halytsko-Frankivsk Regional Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center, along with police officers, were conducting document checks and notification measures near a local store.

During an interaction between the military personnel and a 28-year-old man, who turned out to be a relative of the suspect, a dispute arose. Feeling threatened, the man attempted to flee, while the serviceman tried to stop him. At that moment, according to representatives from the Office of the Prosecutor General, the customs inspector allegedly retrieved a knife from his bag, pursued the serviceman, and inflicted several targeted stabs to his chest and neck.

Tragically, one of these stabs proved fatal, damaging the carotid artery, and despite the efforts of medical personnel, the military officer died en route to the hospital. This incident has sparked widespread public outcry, highlighting the risks faced by military personnel while fulfilling their duties.

After committing the crime, the suspect fled in a vehicle with his brother; however, law enforcement swiftly located and apprehended them in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. A criminal proceeding has been initiated under paragraph 8 of part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which stipulates liability for intentional murder.

This case serves as yet another testament to the critical importance of the safety of military personnel who carry out their duties in high-risk conditions. Authorities and law enforcement agencies have promised to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain all circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and to hold those responsible accountable. Society is awaiting justice in this matter, as the life of every military officer is invaluable.
