Protecting Water Supply Systems: UNDP Discusses Its Work in Ukraine
Ivana Zhivkovych, Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding water supply systems in Ukraine during an interview with Ukrinform, highlighting the organization's extensive experience in this field.
In an insightful interview with Ukrinform, Ivana Zhivkovych, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, discussed the paramount importance of protecting water supply systems in Ukraine. She underscored that the organization possesses significant expertise in this area, having operated in crisis conditions caused by conflicts, natural disasters, and climate change across more than 130 countries worldwide. This global experience is actively applied in Ukraine, where the UNDP collaborates daily with water supply and heating companies.
Zhivkovych emphasized that the primary goal of their work is to identify vulnerabilities within water supply systems, implement backup systems of medium and large capacity, and deploy solutions based on renewable energy sources. This approach significantly enhances the operational resilience of water supply systems in Ukraine, which is particularly crucial under the current circumstances.
Additionally, she reported that the UNDP has ensured reliable electricity supply for wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, and distribution networks. This achievement has been made possible through the use of solar systems, especially in the Sumy region, where over 72,000 people will have stable access to drinking water even during power outages. This project serves as a vivid example of how cutting-edge technologies can help address critical issues.
Moreover, Zhivkovych highlighted that the organization has supported the modernization of water supply systems through energy service contracts. This initiative has enabled municipal enterprises to enhance their efficiency without the need for initial investments, which is a vital aspect given the constraints of limited financial resources.
"Our work is closely coordinated with national authorities, focusing on protecting public health and ensuring that communities never face the humanitarian consequences of prolonged water supply system collapse," stated the regional director. This indicates that the UNDP not only implements projects but also actively collaborates with government structures to achieve common goals.
It is noteworthy that recently, on April 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of strengthening the protection of railways and water infrastructure, including bridges, dams, hydropower plants, and pumping stations. This underscores that the issue of protecting critical infrastructure remains a priority for the Ukrainian government.
