Yulia Starodubtseva Claims Victory in Second Round of WTA 500 Tournament in Charleston Against Ekaterina Gorgodze

Ukrainian tennis player Yulia Starodubtseva, currently ranked 89th in the WTA rankings, secured a remarkable victory in the second round of the prestigious WTA 500 tournament held in Charleston, USA.

In the early hours of April 2, 2023, Ukrainian tennis star Yulia Starodubtseva faced off in her second-round match at the esteemed WTA 500 tournament taking place in Charleston, South Carolina. Originally, she was set to compete against neutral player Ekaterina Alexandrova, who holds a Russian passport. However, due to an injury, Alexandrova was forced to withdraw from the tournament. Stepping in to replace her was lucky loser Ekaterina Gorgodze from Georgia, currently ranked 164th in the WTA standings.

The first set of the match did not start favorably for Starodubtseva, as she lost to Gorgodze with a score of 3-6. Despite the setback in the opening set, the Ukrainian managed to regroup and elevate her level of play. In the subsequent two sets, she showcased an impressive performance, decisively defeating her opponent with scores of 6-1 and 6-2. This match marked the first encounter between Yulia Starodubtseva and Ekaterina Gorgodze, and the Ukrainian was able to assert her dominance with a final match score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

With this victory, Yulia Starodubtseva continues her journey in the tournament and is already preparing for her next match, where she will face Mexican representative Renata Saracua, who is ranked 85th in the WTA rankings. Starodubtseva has already experienced success at the tournament's onset, having previously defeated Chinese player Zhang Shuai, who is ranked 62nd.

It is worth noting that earlier in this tournament, fellow Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska also achieved victory in the first round, defeating Russian Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets. However, in the second round, Yastremska was unable to overcome Swiss player Belinda Bencic. Another Ukrainian, Oleksandra Oleynikova, unfortunately lost in the opening round to Uzbekistan's Polina Kudermetova.

Additionally, it is important to highlight that Ukrainian tennis player Daria Snigur recently won the ITF W75 tournament in Slovenia, and in February, she became the champion of the WTA 125 tournament in Portugal, securing the most significant title of her career. Moreover, Katarina Zavatska emerged as the champion of the ITF W35 tournament in Spain, while 19-year-old Yelyzaveta Kotlyar triumphed in the ITF W15 tennis tournament in France. These achievements reflect the growing potential of Ukrainian female tennis players on the international stage.
