Ukrainian tennis player Yuliya Starodubtseva suffered a defeat in the final of the WTA 500 clay tournament that took place in Charleston, USA. In the title match, Starodubtseva, who is currently ranked 89th in the world, faced off against Jessica Pegula, the fifth-ranked player globally. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian was unable to withstand her opponent's prowess, losing the match with a score of 2-6, 2-6.

At the beginning of the match, the competition was evenly matched; however, at a score of 2-2, Starodubtseva struggled to maintain her momentum and lost four consecutive games. In the second set, Pegula continued to dominate, racing to a 5-0 lead, which placed Starodubtseva in a difficult position. Nevertheless, in the sixth game of the set, Starodubtseva showcased her fighting spirit by saving five match points on her opponent's serve and managed to secure her first break. However, in the following game, Pegula closed out the final on her own serve, concluding the match in her favor.

The WTA 500 final in Charleston was a significant milestone for Yuliya Starodubtseva, marking her first final at the WTA tour level and the biggest match of her career to date. Despite the loss, the Ukrainian displayed exceptional performance throughout the tournament, earning $218,000 in prize money. In the quarter-finals, Starodubtseva confidently beat 26-year-old American McCartney Kessler (ranked 53rd in the WTA) with a score of 6-4, 6-4, and in the semi-finals, she triumphed over Australian Open 2025 champion Madison Keys (ranked 18th in the WTA) with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
