Yulia Starodubtseva Triumphs in WTA Quarterfinals — Semi-Final Debut

In a stunning display of skill, Ukrainian tennis player Yulia Starodubtseva, currently ranked 89th in the WTA standings, secured a decisive victory in the quarterfinals of the prestigious WTA 500 tournament in Charleston, USA.

In the early hours of April 4, Yulia Starodubtseva, a 26-year-old tennis player from Kakhovka, showcased her remarkable talent by defeating her opponent, 26-year-old American McCartney Kessler, who holds the 53rd position in the world rankings, with a score of 6-4, 6-4. The match lasted 1 hour and 38 minutes, during which Yulia demonstrated her mastery on the court.

Throughout the match, Starodubtseva did not commit a single service fault, an impressive achievement, and made only one double fault. She successfully saved 4 out of 6 break points and executed 4 breaks, which were crucial to her victory. This match marked the fourth encounter between the two players, and the head-to-head record now stands at 2-2.

This victory is particularly significant for Yulia, as it marks her first career advancement to the semi-finals of a WTA tournament. In her quest for a spot in the finals, she will face American Madison Keys, who is ranked 18th in the WTA standings and was the champion of Charleston in 2019. Notably, the two players have never met on the court before.

Starodubtseva has now reached her third quarterfinal in the WTA tour, with this victory being her first. Previously, she participated in two quarterfinals that took place in 2024 at WTA 250 hard court tournaments in Monastir and WTA 1000 in Beijing, but was unable to secure a win in those matches.

With this achievement, Yulia Starodubtseva becomes the 19th Ukrainian tennis player to reach at least one semi-final at the WTA Tour level, and she is the third Ukrainian this season to debut at this stage. This reflects the growing prominence of Ukrainian tennis on the international stage.

It is worth noting that at the start of the tournament, the Ukrainian player secured a victory over Chinese player Zhang Shuai, who is ranked 62nd in the WTA standings. In the second round, Yulia defeated Ekaterina Gorgodze from Georgia, ranked 164th, and in the third round, she overcame Mexican tennis player Renata Saracua, who is ranked 85th.

Earlier, we reported that another Ukrainian tennis player, Daria Snihur, won the ITF W75 tournament in Slovenia, further highlighting the successes of Ukrainian athletes on the international stage.
