Ukrainian tennis player Yulia Starodubtseva, currently ranked 89th in the world, achieved a significant victory at the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston by defeating American McCartney Kessler, ranked 53rd. This win marks a pivotal moment in Starodubtseva's career as she advances to her first WTA semifinal.

Yulia Starodubtseva, a Ukrainian tennis player ranked 89th in the world, has made headlines with a remarkable victory at the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston, overcoming American McCartney Kessler, who is ranked 53rd. This victory is particularly significant for Starodubtseva as it represents her first advancement to the semifinals at the WTA level, an important milestone in her career.

After the match, Yulia shared her emotions, stating, “Honestly, I have no words. I was supposed to play qualifying rounds initially, but I was lucky enough to make it into the main draw. And now I’m just happy to be here and take every chance I’ve had this week.” These words reflect the importance of this achievement for her, especially considering her journey began in the qualifying rounds.

Starodubtseva also praised her opponent, noting, “She [Kessler] is a great tennis player. I know her from college — we played at the same time. I studied at Old Dominion, and she was at the University of Florida. I knew she was a strong competitor, so today I needed to step up and play aggressively. I think I managed to do that.” This victory is a testament not only to her talent but also to her hard work and preparation leading up to the tournament.

In the semifinals, Yulia will face American tennis player Madison Keys, who is ranked 18th in the world and was the champion of Charleston in 2019. This will be the first encounter between these two athletes, and Starodubtseva has already expressed her eagerness to enjoy the moment: “I will try to enjoy this moment a little. But of course, it’s very exciting — Madison is a great opponent. As I said, I’m happy to be here. And I wasn’t just lucky — I really worked hard for this. I’m looking forward to the match against Madison Keys.” This statement highlights her confidence and readiness for new challenges ahead.

It is noteworthy that this marks Yulia Starodubtseva's third quarterfinal appearance in the WTA Tour, and she has secured her first victory at this level. Previously, she participated in two quarterfinals in 2024 at WTA 250 hard court tournaments in Monastir and WTA 1000 in Beijing, but was unable to achieve success. Now, following this victory, she has become the 19th Ukrainian tennis player to reach at least one semifinal in the WTA Tour, and she is already the third Ukrainian this season to debut at this stage.

On her path to the semifinals, Starodubtseva secured victories over Chinese player Zhang Shuai (ranked 62nd) in the tournament's opening round, followed by a win against Ekaterine Gorgodze (ranked 164th) from Georgia in the second round, and then defeating Renata Saracua (ranked 85th) from Mexico in the third round. These victories demonstrate her growing form and confidence, which undoubtedly contributed to her success in this tournament.

It is worth mentioning that we previously reported on the successes of Daria Snigur, who won the ITF W75 tournament in Slovenia. Thus, Ukrainian tennis continues to showcase high results on the international stage, with Starodubtseva being a shining example of this progress.
